Copyright
Under the New Zealand Copyright Act 1994 material is protected for different periods of time according to format. A copy of the Act is available on The Knowledge Basket website
Every effort is made to ensure that the Library’s collections are free from legal restrictions and available for public use. However if you want to publish or otherwise distribute materials found in the Library’s collections you are responsible for determining and clearing copyright and meeting any other requirements. The Library may be able to assist with addresses of some copyright holders.
Library staff are happy to discuss any copyright matters with you but are not qualified to give a legal opinion. The Library will not accept responsibility for any decisions about copyright made by users.
We understand that the nature of historical archival collections means that copyright may be difficult or even impossible to determine. In these circumstances the Library will accept a letter in which you accept responsibility for publishing an item for which you have not been able to clear copyright and outlining the steps that you have taken to determine and clear copyright. Note that this procedure does not give you indemnity.
You may be able to help us establish the copyright status and ownership of certain works in our collection. Despite our efforts to trace information on artists and photographers, or their descendents and legatees, sometimes their status is still unclear. We welcome any information that may be helpful to us in this respect.
For further details see the Reproduction/Copyright brochure. Contact us
